KUALA LUMPUR, 3 APRIL 2018 – Every Malaysian on average throws away 300 plastic bags a year, some of which end up in our oceans choking sea life. In view of this, Tesco Malaysia today launched The Unforgettable Bag – a revolutionary new bag design that is the centerpiece of a campaign to help reduce single use plastic bags by encouraging customers to bring back the bags for every time they shop. 

‘The Unforgettable Bag’ campaign is launched ahead of World Earth Day, which is celebrated on 22 April worldwide. Through this campaign, Tesco will be introducing a new reusable bag in three unique designs of endangered sea creatures: 
 
Each of the animal designs contain a barcode, which when scanned by the checkout assistant will give the customers a 20 sen rebate on their total purchase to further encourage customers to reuse bags when they shop at Tesco. The rebate is valid for a maximum of two bags per transaction. Tesco is the first hypermarket in Malaysia to provide rebates for shoppers reusing their shopping bags. The rebate is valid until 31 December 2018.

The unique designs also serve as reminders to shoppers of how a slight change in habit, by reusing bags could make a difference to ocean life. These bags are made of recyclable material and durable compared to the normal plastic bags. 
The campaign was launched by Paul Ritchie, CEO Tesco Malaysia together with Graham Drew, Executive Creative Director of GREY Malaysia, Tesco’s strategic partner in conceptualizing and designing the bags. 

Speaking at the event, Ritchie said, “Conscious of our environment, we are always looking for ways to help our customers to reduce their single use plastic bags consumption from implementing the No Plastic Bags on Saturdays. We do this by encouraging them to trolley their purchases directly to their cars. We also incentivize customers with Green Clubcard points which are turned into shopping vouchers for every time they shop with reusable bags. By launching the Unforgettable Bag, we hope to provide a gentle reminder to all our shoppers on why they need to always bring their reusable bags when they shop with us. 

“We have halved the number of single-use plastic bags given out in our stores between 2011 and 2017, but the rate of reduction is not fast enough. We hope that we’re able to accelerate the reduction of plastic bag use in our operations. Our aim is to further halve the number of plastic bags this year through the Unforgettable Bag campaign,” added Ritchie.

GREY Malaysia Executive Creative Director, Graham Drew said, “We’re proud to be working with Tesco on this important project for this important cause. Every time a bag is brought back, it’s one less in the ocean. With the Unforgettable Bag, we believe more people will get into the habit of reusing bags. While it seems like a small thing, but together we can all make a huge difference,” added Drew.

Tesco is trialing the campaign in Federal Territory and Johor from 3 April 2018 until 31 May. The campaign will be extended nationwide from 1 June and will conclude on 31 December 2018. The Unforgettable Bag will be sold at 50 sen each and Tesco customers will get free replacement if the bag is worn out, torn or damaged by bringing it back to Tesco stores during this period to be recycled.

What is The Unforgettable Bag?

What is the campaign duration?
The Unforgettable Bag campaign starts on 3rd April 2018 until 31 December 2018 at 11 selected stores in Kuala Lumpur and Johor. The campaign will be expanded to all Tesco stores nationwide starting 1st June 2018. 

How do I get The Unforgettable Bags? 
The bags will be made available on sale at 11 stores in Kuala Lumpur and Johor at 50 sen each.

Where can I buy The Unforgettable Bags?
The Unforgettable Bags will be made available for sale at 50 sen per bag starting 3rd April 2018 at 11 stores in Kuala Lumpur and Johor which are:

Who can benefit from the rebate? 
All customers with or without Tesco Clubcard will be able to enjoy this reward as long they bring their own reusable bag or The Unforgettable bag when they shop at Tesco. 


Why is Tesco not considering paper bags or cotton bags instead? 
Paper bags, non-woven and cotton bags has larger carbon footprint compared to plastic bags. You would need to reuse a plastic bag twice to equal the carbon footprint needed to produce the bags. What we’re trying to change here is customer behavior. 


Will I still receive Green Clubcard point if I bring my own bag or The Unforgettable Bag?
Customer can still enjoy Green Clubcard point if they bring their own bag. If customers bring The Unforgettable Bag or any reusable bags, they will get to enjoy both Green Clubcard points and instant rebate of 20 sen (maximum 40 sen per transaction) until 31 December 2018.
